Mules leave the heel open, so their upper and footbed must hold the foot differently from a closed shoe. The design can feel easy and relaxed, but a poor fit may make you grip with your toes or shuffle to prevent the shoe slipping away. Pay attention to your walking pattern during the try-on.
Start with the foot positioned naturally on the base. The heel should not be perched on an edge, and the toes should have comfortable space. A larger size may give more length while reducing the upper's hold; a smaller one may feel secure only because it crowds the front.
Take several ordinary steps
Walk forward, turn, and stop. Ask whether you are moving normally or making a conscious effort to keep the shoe attached. If your toes curl or the foot repeatedly slides forward, compare the model's shape and upper coverage rather than assuming the problem will disappear with practice.
The height of the upper over the foot can make a substantial difference. A low-cut mule may expose more skin but offer less contact. A higher vamp may feel more secure while pressing on the instep. The right balance depends on your foot and the particular construction.
Try both shoes with the hosiery or socks you plan to use, if any. A smooth sock can change how the foot moves against the lining. Barefoot fitting does not tell you exactly how the same mule will behave over tights.
Consider where the shoe will go
An indoor event with short walking distances differs from a day involving stairs, transit, or uneven paths. Choose the mule for its intended role rather than treating a soft upper as proof of all-day suitability. A heel or platform adds another fitting variable and should be assessed in the same ordinary walking test.
Inspect the front edges and lining for points that rub. Adding cushions or pads can alter interior space and foot position, so do not buy a fundamentally loose or tight pair on the assumption that an accessory will rescue it.
The best sign is simple: you can walk naturally without thinking about holding the shoe on. If the design continually draws your attention to your feet during a short indoor test, another shape or a shoe with a back strap may better suit the job.
