A sweater hanging neatly in a shop is not necessarily best stored that way for months. Its weight can pull downward from the shoulder points, especially in a heavy or loosely knitted design. Folding is often the simpler way to support knitwear across a broader area.

Woolmark recommends folding knitted wool garments and using shaped or padded hangers for woven wool clothing. That distinction is a useful starting point, while the specific garment's construction and care guidance remain important.

Fold with the shape in mind

Lay the sweater on a clean surface and bring the sleeves and sides into a relaxed arrangement. Avoid sharply stretching the neckline or pulling the hem straight. A heavy decorative detail should not be pressed into a delicate panel underneath.

Place folded sweaters where they can be lifted out without dragging against rough shelves or neighboring hardware. Very tall piles can make the bottom pieces difficult to access and compress them unnecessarily. A shorter stack or drawer arrangement may be easier to maintain.

For a fine knit, a simple separator can help keep it away from zippers or beaded garments. There is no need to wrap every item elaborately if the storage space is clean and the pieces do not snag one another.

When a hanger is part of your routine

If you choose to hang a particular knit for a short period, assess whether the support distributes its weight adequately and whether the maker allows it. Thin wire shoulders are a poor match for a heavy sweater. Watch for new points or stretched areas rather than assuming a padded hanger solves every design.

Do not hang a wet knit merely because you normally store it on a hanger. Drying instructions are a separate question, and the extra weight can change the result.

Store clean and fully dry

Before seasonal storage, deal with marks according to the care label and let the garment dry completely. Empty pockets and remove detachable accessories that could pull or press into the fabric. Choose a suitable storage location rather than relying on a container to correct damp surroundings.

Labeling a drawer or grouping by weight can make retrieval easier, but avoid packing so tightly that removing one sweater disturbs the entire pile. The purpose is usable storage, not a display that requires constant rearranging.

Choose the method that supports the actual garment and fits the way you get dressed. A folded sweater should be easy to retrieve, and a hanging one should not gradually change shape simply because that arrangement looks tidy.
