A backpack changes how a wool coat sits. Its straps compress the shoulders, the back panel rubs against the cloth, and the load can pull a loose collar toward your neck. When that is your daily carrying arrangement, a fitting-room check without the bag leaves out an important part of the outfit.

Bring your normal backpack with a representative load. You do not need to overfill it; the point is to reproduce a typical commute. Put the coat on over the sweater or shirt you expect to wear, then adjust the bag to its ordinary position.

Watch the coat after the bag goes on

Check the shoulder seams and collar in a mirror. If the coat lifts sharply at the back or the neckline presses forward, compare another cut before assuming the straps alone are responsible. A dropped shoulder, padded shoulder, or very thick lapel can interact with a strap differently.

Walk, reach for a pocket, and slip one strap off as you would when retrieving something. Notice whether the bag catches on decorative tabs, loose belt ends, or a raised seam. A coat can fit well while still being awkward with the bag you use every day.

Consider the surface

Woolmark explains that rubbing contributes to pilling. That does not mean every backpack will ruin a wool coat, or that a particular wool percentage guarantees resistance. A visibly fuzzy, loosely textured surface may warrant more careful consideration where straps and the back panel repeatedly move against it.

Inspect the backpack too. Rough mesh, exposed hook-and-loop fasteners, or damaged strap edges can create friction regardless of the coat price. Repairing a rough bag edge may be more useful than upgrading to a more expensive coat and expecting it to be immune.

The coat's weight and the bag's weight combine during the journey. If a heavy fabric already feels tiring on its own, adding your usual load may change the decision. Check freedom of movement across the upper back, especially if you need to reach an overhead train handle.

Before purchase, read the care instructions and decide how much surface maintenance you are willing to do. A coat that looks appealing only when freshly brushed may not suit a rushed routine. Choose for the actual combination of garment, bag, and movement; the backpack is part of the fit, not an accessory to consider afterward.
