Stretch is the ability of a fabric to extend; recovery is how it returns after that movement. They are related, but they are not the same observation. A trouser waistband can feel wonderfully forgiving during a try-on and become looser than you prefer after sitting.
Elastane, also called spandex, is often included in stretch fabrics. Its listed percentage is useful composition information, but it cannot describe every aspect of the finished textile. Yarn, construction, finishing, and the garment's cut also affect the result.
Use ordinary movement
Try the garment at a size that allows the intended movement without keeping the fabric under constant tension. Sit, bend the knees, reach forward, and return to a relaxed position. Look at the elbows, knees, seat, and waistband as appropriate.
Some temporary folds are normal. The question is whether the garment still feels comfortably positioned and whether the overall shape remains acceptable to you. A short indoor try-on cannot predict months of wear, so avoid treating it as proof of long-term performance.
Do not repeatedly pull a fabric hard between your hands. That can distort a new item and does not reproduce the way a well-fitting garment should be worn.
Compare a known reference
A favorite pair of stretch trousers can be a useful reference, especially if you note both the composition and the fit. But a new pair with the same elastane percentage is not necessarily equivalent. Compare the density and direction of give, as well as the pattern measurements.
A waistband may use a separate elastic component even when the body fabric has little stretch. Check both parts. The body can fit well while the waistband twists, or the waistband can feel secure while the knees become looser than you want.
Care instructions matter when preserving the intended behavior. Follow the garment's directions for washing and drying rather than assuming that a hot wash will restore a stretched area. Heat and repeated treatment are not selective tailoring tools.
If the garment only looks right while you stand still and hold it in place, reconsider the size or cut. Stretch should help the clothing move with you, not conceal a pattern that lacks the room you need. A useful purchase balances comfortable extension with a resting shape you are happy to wear.
